Church of the Valley is a participating congregation in The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We
usually call ourselves "Disciples of Christ" or just "Disciples," for short. The Disciples of Christ
began nearly 200 years ago as a religious movement on the American frontier.
For many years, the Disciples motto has
been: In essentials, unity In opinions, liberty In all things, charity
This sums up the doctrinal stance of the Disciples of Christ.
Even though we believe that ALL Christians have their individual journeys of faith, we also affirm our unity through shared
faith in Jesus Christ. We are united by our belief that God speaks to us in a unique and special way through Christ, calling
us to salvation, ministry, and spiritual growth. Other than this, we hold to no other formal set of doctrinal statements.
We honor each person’s spiritual quest and encourage all people to seriously seek out God in all things. We respect
the traditions of the Christian faith and strive for Christian unity between all believers, regardless of denominational affiliation.
As a sign of Christian unity, we share the Communion Meal (the Lord's Supper) each week as part of our worship.
The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew is a reminder of the ministry of each person
and the importance of evangelism.
